770x470_blog_seasonedskillet_joe‘Seasoned Skillets’  is our series designed to showcase the Skilljar team behind the business. These folks (aka Skillets)  are developing, designing, writing, calling, measuring, analyzing, and more to propel Skilljar forward as a market leader in the customer education industry. Next up, Joe!

How did you hear about Skilljar?

Skilljar’s name popped up a couple of times on sites like Glassdoor and Indeed when I was job hunting. The more that I read about the company’s growth, vision, and leadership, the more interested I became, and the more I wanted to learn about Skilljar.

What does your role entail?

I support all things recruiting. Most of my time is spent communicating and coordinating, both internally with our hiring teams and managers, and externally with candidates. I also help build and support different recruiting projects and initiatives.

What advice would you give someone getting into technology recruiting?

Spend time learning about the competition. The tech scene in Seattle is booming and growing and will only continue to do so. This creates a competitive recruiting environment for top talent. Learning more about what other companies are doing for their culture, hiring, and growth enables us to better understand how to stay competitive in this saturated hiring space.

What makes someone successful in recruiting at Skilljar?

Always be learning! Recruiting naturally touches all corners of a business, especially so in a growing startup. I try to engage with our different departments and teams so that the recruiting team can better understand how and where to focus to help the teams grow where they need to.

Skilljar is a fast-paced, rapidly changing place. What’s your advice for navigating (and excelling) in the startup environment?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. This is true anywhere, but in fast changing start-ups, it’s essential. There have been, and will inevitably continue to be, plenty of situations where I’ve felt in over my head. In these moments, being able to admit you don’t know something and ask the right questions will be what helps you tackle challenges as they arise.

Favorite Skilljar perk?

Our catered lunches! There’s always a variety of delicious food to choose from week-to-week, and it’s a great time to sit down and chat with other Skillets I don’t always get face time with during the rest of the week.

How do you manage your work/life balance?

I do my best to leave work at work so that I can be more engaged with regular life happenings. Random situations will always creep up that need to be dealt with, but overall, there’s a healthy culture at Skilljar about promoting a good work/life balance. Our flexible time off policy helps too!

Favorite place to visit in Seattle?

It’s an hour north of Seattle, but the Lake 22 hiking trail. It’s always my go-to recommendation when you need a good outdoor getaway.

If you were going to offer a course online, what would it be about?

Probably a music course. I’ve never taught music before, but I’ve always been interested in it and I think it would be a fun challenge!
