Once you’ve created your training content and set up a course, you’re ready for the next step: publishing! Publishing is the final step to make your course available for registration. Skilljar’s robust publishing tool provides many options to meet your unique training needs. In this article, we review each of these different publishing options. So give yourself a pat on the back for finishing your content (that’s the hardest part of the process!), and check out the options below as you get ready to publish your course.

We’ll cover the following publishing features:

  • Selecting a domain
  • Course availability and pricing
  • Setting the enrollment period
  • Adding a catalog tag

Selecting a domain

The first step will be to select the domain that you want to publish your course to.

  • The domain is your training site’s URL.
  • Your course’s published URL will include the domain.
  • If you have more than one course published to a domain, all of your published courses will display on your domain, called the course catalog.

  • If you’d like to reorder your courses on the catalog page, you can do so by using the “Change Order” tool on the Domains & Publishing page of your dashboard.
  • You can even publish a course to more than one domain. A software company might use two different domains to support two unique training audiences, for example: 1) customers who buy their product and 2) consultants who implement their product. If there are any courses that overlap both audiences, those courses can be published to both domains.

Course availability and pricing

These settings offer options for how trainees can find and register for your course.

  • Open for registration: Make a course open for registration when you are ready to receive new registrants. You can deselect this option to prevent new trainees from registering, while still allowing trainees who have already registered to continue their access.

  • New! Catalog visibility: We’re very excited to announce this new feature that allows you to configure which courses display in your catalog. You can use this setting to limit a course to a specific group of trainees only. By removing the course from your catalog, you’ll prevent general visitors to your training site from being able to register for the course. To invite selected trainees to register, you can send them the direct course link.
  • You can offer a course for free, or set a price to charge for it. Check out our article How to Price Your Online Course for some helpful tips on pricing. If you’d like to offer a course in a currency other than USD, we support that too!

Setting the enrollment period

Many companies prefer to limit access to courses to a set period of time, like 30 days or 1 year for example.

  • You have the option to offer registrations with unlimited access, or configure them to automatically expire after a set number of days, weeks or months.
  • Trainees can re-register after their access expires if they need a little more time.

Adding a catalog tag

As you publish more and more courses, the catalog feature makes it easy for trainees to find the course they need when browsing your course catalog.

  • You can set categories for a course by tagging it with one or multiple attributes. Tags like “Beginner” and “Advanced” are just a couple of examples of categories that may be helpful.
  • The categories display with your catalog, making it easy for trainees to filter for the courses they need.
